What are Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Movies?
Going to the movies is an immersive experience. The moment you walk into the theater, you’re greeted by bright lights, the smell of popcorn, and larger than life movie posters. After you’ve picked up your giant bucket of popcorn and accompanying extra large soda, you find your way to your seat. The lights dim, and the movie starts. The sounds and sights put you back in your seat and before you know it hours have past.
Dolby Atmos, the company who does sound for many movies, is bringing you a new immersive technology through their Dolby Atmos Blu-ray movies.
What are Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Movies
Most people know that a blu-ray movie isan extremely high-quality video. Blu-ray is quickly becoming the standard way to watch movies. Dolby put a lot of work into upping their movie game to create Dolby Atmos Blu-ray, a blu-ray quality movie, now with blu-ray quality sound.
Dolby labs originally came up with the idea back in 2012. Dolby Atmos Blu-ray movies have 64 different channels of sound. This gives movie makers a significant amount of control when dealing with the movie’s audio quality. Most movies have only a few audio channels, which means which means that directors can’t control sounds in their movies nearly as much.
Until now, movie makers have focused on the visual aspects of movie making. They’ve been going for more and more visual detail. While the visual aspects of movie making are clearly important, audio quality is important as well. Dolby decided it’s time to stop ignoring audio quality.
Why Would I Want Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Movies?
These extra channels mean that a Dolby Atmos Blu-ray movie provides sound quality that no other movie format can. It provides an immersive experience as you hear sounds from speakers in front, to the side, and behind you.
Even though surround sound has the ability to surround you, it usually only has a couple channels for sound. That means you might get sound from one or two directions, but the point of surround sound is to surround you with sound so it isn’t just coming from one or two directions.
Dolby Blu-rays take this concept further by creating that 64 channel track for audio. Dolby isn’t trying to simply make the sound come from everywhere but instead make specific sounds come from specific places. If a car drives past a character, you can hear it drive up from behind you and pass in front of you. If a man is yelling in front and throws an object at someone who’d be behind you, you’ll hear the yelling up front and the object smacking into the wall behind.
Dolby Blu-ray is the next great “thing” in film.
