Remember going to the movie theater as a kid? The huge screen, the massive buckets of popcorn and soda and the speakers that would blast you into your seat? It was a full-body experience that could suck you in for hours at a time.
Well, now Dolby is trying to improve on the movie theater experience with a new technology called Dolby Atmos Blu-ray movies.
What are Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Movies
Most people know what a blu-ray movie is. It’s an extremely high-quality video. Blu-ray is quickly becoming the standard way to see a movie. Dolby decided to up their movie game by creating Dolby Atmos, which is a blu-ray quality movie with blu-ray quality sound.
Dolby labs originally came up with the idea back in 2012. Dolby Atmos Blu-ray movies have 64 different channels of sound. This gives movie makers a significant amount of control regarding sound quality. Most movies have significantly fewer channels which means which means that directors can’t manipulate sounds in their movies nearly as much.
Up until now, movie makers have focused on the visual aspect of movie making. They’ve been going for more and more visual detail. They’re not happy until you can see the actor’s every scar, pore and blemish. While the visual aspects of movie making are clearly important, audio quality is important as well. Dolby decided it’s time we stop ignoring sound quality.
Why Would I Want Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Movies
These extra channels mean that a Dolby Atmos Blu-ray movie can give you sound quality that no other movie format possibly can. It provides you a full-body experience as you hear sounds from speakers in front, to the side, and behind you.
Surround sound has the ability to surround you as well but normally it only has a couple channels. That means you might get sound from one or two directions but the point of surround sound is to mostly to surround you with one sound so it isn’t just coming from one direction.
Dolby Blu-rays take this concept further by creating that 64 channel track. Dolby isn’t trying to simply make the sound come from everywhere but instead make specific sounds come from specific places. If a car drives past a character, you can hear it drive up from behind you and pass in front of you. If a man is yelling in front and throws an object at someone who’d be behind you, you’ll hear the yelling up front and the object smacking into the wall behind.
Dolby Blu-ray is the next great “thing” in film.
What movies are available in Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Movies
Unfortunately, because this technology is pretty new, there aren’t a ton of titles out in Dolby Atmos Blu-ray. Obviously, not every movie title is going to interest every moviegoer but there’s bound to be something for everyone. Dolby is always adding new titles to their website so customers can know exactly what is available.
