Inside a Custom Home Theater Built for Family Movie Nights

See what went into a five-year private cinema project by Argenta

It's easy to start a home theater with a shopping list. You pick a projector first, then build the room around whatever fits. The result can look impressive and still feel like watching a movie in a basement, with washed-out blacks and household noise creeping in during quiet scenes.

Our client wanted a different outcome. Their goal for this custom home theater was easy to describe and hard to build: a room that puts you inside the movie and gives a young family a place to spend time together for years. Argenta led the project over five years, and the finished cinema offers a clear look at how a reference-level room comes together. Keep reading to see what goes into it.

Start With How You Want the Room to Feel

The family asked for performance first and style second, because the feeling of being pulled into a film starts with what you see and hear. The project began as a theater for a home planned in Park City, Utah, and later moved to the family's Virginia residence.

Argenta designed the full system and selected each manufacturer, then brought the team together around one plan. Lisa Slayman of Slayman Cinema designed the look and acoustics of the room, with a classic, subtly Disney-inspired style. She also shaped the lighting. LBI Boyd built the space and handled every finish. Fusion AV, Argenta's sister company, took on the whole-home system so the theater connects with the rest of the house.

Keeping that many teams aligned was the hardest part of the job. Every drawing had to match, since a small compromise in the design would show up later in the experience. On your own project, one integrator leading the team keeps those details on track.

How the Picture Fills a 217-Inch Screen

The screen is a 217-inch Seymour Screen Excellence scope screen with a 2.37:1 shape, which closely matches the wide format many feature films use. Widescreen films fill the whole surface without black bars at the top and bottom. The screen is also acoustically transparent, so sound passes through the material, and the main speakers can stay hidden behind it.

A Barco Residential Heimdall+ Cinemascope projector with surface lights that are rated at 6,000 lumens. That brightness keeps colors rich on a screen this large. The projector also runs at a quiet 29 dB, so you won't hear it during a tense scene.

Between your movie sources and the projector sits a madVR Envy Extreme MK2 video processor. It reads each frame of HDR content and adjusts the image scene by scene, so dark moments keep their detail and bright highlights stay vivid. It also upscales lower-resolution content and automatically controls screen masking when a film changes shape.

Sound You Feel Without Seeing a Speaker

The audio follows a 14.4.4 layout. The first number represents 14 listening-level channels, and the other two represent 4 subwoofers and 4 overhead channels. A StormAudio ISP Elite 24 processor decodes formats like Dolby Atmos, so sound moves around and above you the way the filmmakers mixed it.

Behind the screen, three Wisdom Audio Sage Cinema Line 3 speakers handle the front channels. Each one stands over six feet tall and uses planar-magnetic drivers arranged as a line source. That design spreads sound across the width of the room and cuts down on floor and ceiling reflections, so dialogue stays clear in every seat. Four Wisdom STS subwoofers add bass you feel in your chest.

The theater is built as a room within a room. Kinetics Noise Control isolation separates it from the house, so the movie stays inside, and household noise stays out. Argenta then calibrated the audio and video to the finished room. A Control4 system and Josh.ai voice control run the space, so starting movie night takes one touch or a quick voice command.

Bring That Experience to Your Home

The cinema shows what happens when a family's vision leads the way and one team carries it through. Your own theater may look different, though the same planning principles apply to rooms of every size. If you'd like to talk through ideas for a private cinema in your home, contact the Argenta team or visit our Sandy showroom to hear about the system in person. We look forward to helping you plan.
